Beneath the buzz of family drama and frenzied Christmas activity, the 1989 film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation tells a story of work hurt. Clark Griswold works for a company that makes food additives. In the days leading up to Christmas, Clark anxiously awaits his annual Christmas bonus, which he hopes will be enough to cover the down payment he made on a new swimming pool. On Christmas Eve, Clark learns his Christmas bonus isn’t a check but rather a one-year membership in a jelly-of-the-month club.
It’s the last straw on a day of celebration gone awry. Clark can’t contain his disappointment and unleashes his rage on everyone around him. It ruins Christmas. His hurt spills over onto his Cousin Eddie who decides to help Clark get vengeance and nearly lands them both in jail. What a mess!
Work Hurt in Christmas Movies
Last Christmas I noticed that work hurt is part of the plotline of several of my favorite Christmas movies. I wonder if you’ve observed those themes as well.
Play Bingo for a Chance to Win
I created a bingo card that you can print and use as you watch Christmas movies this year. If you get a bingo (down, across, or diagonal), comment on this post listing the squares you crossed off and the Christmas movie where you observed the form of work hurt you crossed off. I’ll randomly draw one name from those who comment with their bingo and pre-order a copy of When Work Hurts for the winner.
The contest ends on December 31, 2024.

Feel free to follow me on social media as well. I’m most active on Instagram and LinkedIn. Last year I shared some of my favorite Christmas movies on Instagram. I’d love to know what some of your favorites are as well.
